Description

In 1888, the Milan publication the Gazzetta Musicale published the Enigmatic scale (invented by professor Adolfo Crescentini) and challenged composers to harmonize with it in some fashion. The publication described that the Enigmatic scale contains unique and unusual intervals.

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was the first composer to use the Enigmatic scale in his 1897 composition Ave Maria. The Enigmatic scale is used throughout the composition among the bass, alto, tenor, and soprano lines. Verdi wrote Ave Maria as a technical exercise and never meant for it to be performed. Popularity of Ave Maria peaked after the death of Verdi, and it its haunting melody is still heard in churches, orchestra halls, and other media outlets.

Many famous Rock and Jazz musicians throughout the twentieth century have used the Enigmatic Scale in their compositions. Frank Zappa, John Coltrane, Scott Henderson, John Scofield, Allan Holdsworth, and Arnold Schoenberg have each used the Enigmatic Scale in one or more of their compositions.
